First Scan

March 9, 2010

So our first scan was a huge success! We have a perfect baby according to the sonographer and we ended up with some amazingly clear pictures which I can’t stop looking at! They dated us at 12 weeks and 2 days which is exactly what we thought and two days ahead of what the medical professionals originally thought. I had a cup of tea an hour before my scan as I’d read that the caffiene makes the baby more wriggly and whoever wrote that wasn’t wrong! I ended up with quite a long scan because the baby wouldn’t keep still for long enough for any measurements to be taken. The nuchal translucency looked good, I didn’t see the number go above 1.3mm and the sonographer said that they start to worry when it goes over 3.5mm so as long as the bloods come back ok then I’m low risk for Downs. Baby measured 60mm and has everything  in the right place.

It was just the most amazing experience, the moving images were even clearer than the pictures and we got to see everything in detail including the brain, hands and feet. I didn’t look until the sonographer said that the baby was wriggling about but Jeff said that it was incredible how quickly she found the baby – obviously a lot of experience combined with a baby in the perfect position! The whole thing (including having my triple test bloods taken and some extra for a study I’m participating in) took about 45mins.

I just want to go back and see him/her swimming around again!
